SIM / APN and server setup sheet

Most devices that do not connect after installation have a SIM, APN or server setting wrong. Keep those values in one sheet and record five checks for every activation.

Free: enter your name and email and we send you the file. Works in Excel, Microsoft 365, Google Sheets and LibreOffice Calc. No macros.

What's inside

We leave the values empty. You fill them from the source.

No APN, address, port or command is written for you. Each one is empty and yellow, with a note saying where it comes from.

The Activation log

Five checks, in the order a signal travels

Answer Yes or No for each. The sheet shows the result and the first step that failed.

  1. SIM registered on the network

The device sees a cellular network and has usable signal.

    Check 1
  2. Data session open

The APN is accepted, so the device can send data.

    Check 2
  3. Server link works

The address, port and protocol reach your server.

    Check 3
  4. Visible on the platform

The device ID is registered and assigned to a vehicle.

    Check 4
  5. GNSS fix

The device reports a valid position outdoors.

How do I fill in the setup sheet?

  1. Carrier profiles. Add the APN, user name, password and authentication that your carrier gives for the SIM type you use. Write where you got them and the date you checked.
  2. Server profiles. Add the address, port and protocol your platform gives for devices. Add a test server too, so you can try a device before it goes live.
  3. Activation log. For each device, pick the carrier and server profiles. The APN, address, port and protocol fill in. Write the command or setting you sent, as your device manual gives it.
  4. Five checks. Answer Yes or No when you can. A blank means not tested yet.

The first failing step

A device passes through the same chain every time. If the SIM is not registered, nothing after it can work, so the first No is usually the cause. The Summary counts these, so you see whether your installs fail on the SIM, the APN, the server link, the platform or the GNSS fix.

Result = Online if all five checks are Yes Result = Failed if any check is No, otherwise In progressFirst failing step = the first No in the order aboveThe Diagnose sheet gives, for every step, what to check and where to look.

Keeping carrier values current

Carriers change their settings and their plans. Each carrier row shows Verified, Review due or Not verified from the date you last checked it and the review interval you set. The file starts with 180 days. That is a typical value. Set what suits you.

Typical value. Replace it with your own review interval.

Handling sensitive values

Server addresses and passwords can be sensitive. Do not send a file that holds them to people who do not need them. Keep those rows in a protected copy and share a version without them.

Limits

Values come from the source

This sheet does not know your carrier, your platform or your device. It stores what you enter and checks the order of the steps. Take every value and command from your carrier, your platform and your device manual.

Activating many devices at once? Talk to Tracom.

Why are the APN and server cells empty?

Because those values belong to your carrier, your platform and your device manual, and they change. A wrong value that looks official is worse than an empty cell.

Is the operator list a list of supported carriers?

No. It has country and operator names as a starting point. Check them, rename them or delete them.

What is the difference between a regular and an M2M SIM?

An M2M or IoT SIM is sold for machines, often with its own plan and APN. Ask your carrier which type you have, because the APN can differ.

A device passed all five checks but shows no position. What now?

Check 5 is the GNSS fix. If it is Yes and the map is still wrong, check the vehicle assignment and the platform time zone, then see the Diagnose sheet.

Can I use the sheet for devices that are not from Tracom?

Yes. Nothing in it is specific to one brand. The model list has an Other choice.

What is Tracom's role here?

Tracom makes the devices. This sheet is a neutral record. It does not contain Tracom commands or approved carrier settings. Your device manual does.
