2G/3G sunset migration guide and plan

When an operator switches off 2G or 3G, a tracker that can only use that network goes silent. Count your devices, ask your carrier for the date in writing, and replace in batches.

What's inside

What is inside the migration guide and plan?

Part A is a short guide. Part B holds the tables you fill in. It has no shutdown dates: those come from your operator.

  1. 01

    Carrier log

Country, operator, network, the switch-off date as written by the operator, and where you got it. Cells read Check with your carrier until you fill them.

  2. 02

    Device inventory

One row per vehicle: model, IMEI, the network the model can use, SIM operator, install year and contract.

  3. 03

    Priority score

Five questions, 0 to 2 points each, giving priority A, B or C. The bands are typical and you can change them.

  4. 04

    Budget

Devices, installation, SIM or plan change and a reserve, by priority group. No prices are filled in.

  5. 05

    Batches

Pilot first, then the groups: week, vehicles, location, installer, spare units and status.

  6. 06

    After-swap record

Old and new IMEI, data arriving, settings copied, cameras tested, old unit and SIM handled.

What does a 2G or 3G switch-off do to a tracker?

A tracker sends its position over a mobile network through a SIM card. When an operator switches off a network, a device whose modem can only use that network can no longer connect. It stops sending position, events and video, and the vehicle can vanish from your platform with nothing wrong on the vehicle.

Devices that also support 4G may carry on, but only if their settings and the SIM plan allow it. Check each model, and do not assume.

Getting the dates

Shutdown dates differ by country and by operator, and they change. This file states none. Ask every operator whose SIM cards you use, in writing, and keep the notice. The carrier log records the date, the regions, the source and who confirmed it.

  1. Ask which networks and regions. 2G, 3G or both, and whether the switch-off comes in stages.
  2. Ask about your SIM plan. Roaming and IoT SIM plans may follow different rules.
  3. File the answer. Write the source and the date you received it next to the date.
Check with your carrier.

Tracom does not supply or confirm network shutdown dates for any country. Your operator, or your telecom regulator, is the source.

Setting priorities

You cannot replace everything in a day. Score each vehicle on five questions: contract need, safety use, how near the operator's date is, weak 4G coverage on its routes, and value. The total gives a priority.

First

A

Score 7 to 10

Typical case
Contract, safety or a near date
When
First batches
Finish well before the operator's date.

B

Score 4 to 6

Typical case
Important, date not close
When
Middle batches
Use the time to learn from the pilot.

C

Score 0 to 3

Typical case
Low use, easy cover
When
Last batches
Still before the operator's date.

Typical bands. Set your own.

Budget

Cost of a group = devices x (device + installation + SIM or plan + other)
Total = A + B + C + reserveIllustration: 10 x (100 + 20 + 5 + 0) = 1,250Illustrative figures in units of your currency. They are not prices. Take real figures from your supplier's quote.

After each swap

  • Confirm that position, ignition and your inputs arrive on the platform.
  • Link the new IMEI to the right vehicle and keep the vehicle's history with it.
  • Copy the report interval, alerts, geofences, panic button and driver ID settings.
  • Test cameras if the vehicle has an MDVR.
  • Log the old device and deactivate or reassign the old SIM.

Limits of this file

It is a planning tool. It does not know your operator's plans, your devices' network support or your costs. You enter those. It does not change anything on a device.

Plan the replacement with the device maker

Tell us how many devices you run and in which countries. We help match each vehicle to a Tracom device and plan the batches with your installer. Network support for each model comes from its datasheet: ask us for it.

  • SCMS portal. See which devices reported last, in one place.
  • Advanced configuration files. Apply the same settings to every new device.
  • Over-the-air updates. Keep the new devices current after install.
  • Second-by-second data. Check that a new device reports as the old one did.
Questions

Migration plan questions, answered

Need help matching devices to vehicles? Talk to Tracom.

When will 2G or 3G be switched off in my country?

Ask your operator. Dates differ by country and operator, and this file states none. Write the date, its source and the day you received it in the carrier log.

How do I know if my device can use 4G?

Read the model's datasheet or ask the supplier. If you cannot find out, write Not sure in the inventory and treat the device as a risk until you do.

Do I replace every device at once?

No. Score vehicles, start with a pilot batch, then replace by priority. Finish the first group well before the operator's date.

Does the file contain prices?

No. The budget table is empty. The example in the file uses made-up round numbers that only show the formula.

Does it work in Google Docs?

Yes. Upload the Word file to Google Drive and open it with Google Docs. The tables stay editable. It also works in Word and LibreOffice Writer.

What is Tracom's role here?

Tracom makes the devices. The file is a planning template. Tracom does not supply or confirm shutdown dates, and the file does not say that any device or plan meets a requirement.
