Video clip fingerprint (SHA-256) and chain-of-custody sheet

Pick a clip exported from the recorder. Your browser computes its SHA-256 fingerprint on this device. Log every handover, then check later that each copy is still the same file.

Clip files

Choose files or drop them here. Up to 10 files of up to 4,000 MB each. The files stay on this device and are never uploaded.

Try it without a file. Change one character and the whole fingerprint changes.

Paste the SHA-256 written on the earlier record. Spaces, colons and capitals are ignored.

How this is calculated
fingerprint = SHA-256 of every byte of the file 256 bits = 64 hexadecimal characters same bytes = same fingerprint; one byte changed = a different fingerprint files up to 512 MB: the browser WebCrypto; larger files: read in 8 MB slices

Keep the record with the clip

A report with the fingerprints, the corrected clip times and every handover. The clip itself is never sent.

Custody report

Get the fingerprint and custody record by e-mail

  • File name, size, date and SHA-256 of each clip
  • Comparison with the fingerprint you pasted
  • Clip times corrected for the recorder clock
  • Every handover with its check status
  • Method, limits and the legal-review note
Inside the record

One sheet that follows the clip

The custody sheet names the clip, its fingerprint and each person who held it. Anyone can re-compute the fingerprint and compare.

What a fingerprint shows
QuestionAnswer
Is this copy identical to the file fingerprinted earlier?Yes, if the fingerprints match
Was the clip edited before the first fingerprint? Not shown
When and where was it recorded? Not shown: use the recorder log and GPS data
Will a court, insurer or authority accept it?Not claimed: ask your legal team
Handling a clip

Four habits that keep a clip usable

A fingerprint only helps if it is taken early and checked at every handover.

  1. Fingerprint at export

Compute the fingerprint as soon as the clip leaves the recorder. Earlier is stronger.

  2. Never convert the original

Re-encoding or changing the container format changes the bytes. Work on a copy and keep the original as exported.

  3. Check at every handover

The receiver re-computes the fingerprint and writes Matches or Does not match on the sheet.

  4. Write the clock offset

Compare the recorder clock with GPS time on the day of export. A clip time is only as good as the clock that wrote it.

What does the clip fingerprint tool do?

It reads a video file on your device and computes its SHA-256 fingerprint: a 64-character code that changes completely if a single byte of the file changes. It then helps you keep a custody sheet: who released the clip, who received it, when, and whether the fingerprint still matched.

The file is never uploaded. If you ask for the report, only its name, size, date and fingerprint are sent to our server with the request and kept for up to 45 days.

Why fingerprint a clip?

A crash clip from the recorder is copied many times: to a laptop, to storage, to an insurer, to a lawyer. Each copy should be the same file. Comparing fingerprints answers that in seconds, without watching the clip again.

How it is calculated

SHA-256 is the hash function of the Secure Hash Standard, FIPS 180-4, published by NIST. Files up to 512 MB are hashed by the browser's own WebCrypto function. Larger files are read in 8 MB slices and hashed by the page itself, so the whole file never has to sit in memory. Both give the same result. The page code is tested against the published FIPS 180-4 example values.

fingerprint = SHA-256(file bytes), 64 hex characters match = pasted fingerprint (cleaned) = computed fingerprint reference start = recorder start - clock offset reference end = reference start + clip length

Worked example

Type abc in the text field. The fingerprint is ba7816bf 8f01cfea 414140de 5dae2223 b00361a3 96177a9c b410ff61 f20015ad, the value printed in the FIPS 180-4 examples. Type abd and almost every character changes.

In the custody sheet, the recorder shows 07:42:10 and runs 28 s ahead of GPS time. The clip really started at 07:41:42 and, at 45 s long, ended at 07:42:27.

Reading the results

  • Matches: the copy is bit-for-bit the file that was fingerprinted earlier.
  • Does not match: the bytes differ. Find out why before you use the copy.
  • Chain break: the person who released the clip is not the one who received it last.
  • Not checked: the fingerprint was not re-computed at that handover.

Assumptions and limits

A fingerprint shows that two files are identical. It does not show when the clip was recorded, whether it was edited before the first fingerprint, or that any court, insurer or authority will accept it. Very large files take time to read, and the browser must stay open. The custody sheet needs legal review before you rely on it.

Clips from the recorder, kept as files

Tracom M1N is a mobile DVR (MDVR). Camera options such as DSM/ADAS are confirmed with the Tracom team. Ask us how clips are exported on your M1N setup, then fingerprint each one here.

  • DSM and ADAS cameras on the same recorder, with one channel per camera.
  • Export once and keep the original with one custodian.
  • Fingerprint every copy at export and at each handover.
  • Settings through the SCMS portal with updates over the air (OTA).

Clip fingerprint questions, answered

What is a SHA-256 fingerprint of a video file?

It is a 64-character code computed from every byte of the file. The same file always gives the same code. Change one byte and the code changes completely.

Is my video uploaded anywhere?

No. Your browser reads the file on this device. If you ask for the report, the file name, size, date and fingerprint are sent to our server with the request and kept for up to 45 days, never the clip.

Does a matching fingerprint prove the clip is genuine?

No. It proves the copy is identical to the file fingerprinted earlier. It says nothing about edits made before that. Fingerprint as early as you can, ideally at export.

Why does a second export of the same event give a different fingerprint?

Because it is a different file. A new export can change the container, the time stamps inside the file or the length. Fingerprint the exact file you hand over.

Will a court or insurer accept this custody sheet?

Not necessarily. Requirements differ from case to case. The sheet needs legal review before use, and the tool makes no claim about acceptance.

What is Tracom's role here?

Tracom makes the recorder hardware. We do not hold your clips, act as their custodian or certify them. Your team keeps the clips and the custody sheet.
