Tracker list validator: IMEI, SIM ICCID, plates and dates

Paste or load the CSV you are about to import. The tool checks every IMEI check digit, ICCID, repeated plate and date, then gives you a clean file and a list of what to fix. Calculations run in your browser. Inputs are sent only if you ask for the emailed report.

One vehicle per row, with a header row if you have one. Columns are found from their names (plate, IMEI, ICCID, install date, expiry) or from what the values look like. Up to 10,000 rows. The sample is made up. Replace it with your list.

Load a sample

Every row is checked on its own, then the whole list is checked for repeats. A row with an error goes to the rejected file. A row with only warnings stays in the clean file.

Filters the list of rows. The counts, the report and the files always use every row.

How the checks work
IMEI: double every second digit from the right of the 14-digit body, add the digits, check digit = (10 - sum mod 10) mod 10 49015420323751 → sum 52 → check digit 8 → 490154203237518

What does a valid IMEI look like?

An IMEI is 15 digits. The first 8 identify the device model (the type allocation code), the next 6 are a serial number, and the last one is a check digit. The check digit lets a system catch a mistyped IMEI before it reaches a database.

IMEI by length
DigitsWhat it isHow the tool treats it
15IMEI with its check digitChecked. A wrong check digit is an error.
14IMEI without the check digitError. The tool shows the digit that would complete it.
16IMEISV: the software version replaces the check digitWarning. It cannot be checked.

The check digit, step by step

IMEI and ICCID use the Luhn check. This example is the IMEI published on the IMEI article of Wikipedia.

49015420323751 + ? = 490154203237518

  • Start from the right of the 14-digit body 49015420323751 and double every second digit: 1 becomes 2, 7 becomes 14, 2 becomes 4, 0 stays 0, 4 becomes 8, 1 becomes 2, 9 becomes 18.
  • Add all the digits. A doubled number counts by its digits, so 14 is 1 + 4 = 5 and 18 is 1 + 8 = 9. The doubled digits give 30, the others give 22, and the sum is 52.
  • The check digit is the number that brings the sum to a multiple of 10: (10 - 52 mod 10) mod 10 = 8. The full IMEI is 490154203237518.
check digit = (10 - (sum mod 10)) mod 10Luhn algorithm. For a full number, the same sum including the check digit must be a multiple of 10.

The Excel trap: long numbers in scientific notation

Open a CSV in Excel by double-clicking it and every long number becomes a number. Excel keeps 15 significant digits, so a 19-digit ICCID loses its last digits, and it may display an IMEI as 4.90154E+14. Saving the file again writes the damaged value. The tool flags this as an error because the digits cannot be recovered.

  • Open the file with Data, then From Text/CSV, and set the IMEI and ICCID columns to Text before you load them.
  • If the number was already damaged, get it again from the source: the device label, the SIM supplier file or the platform.
  • Paste the raw text here instead of saving the sheet again.

What does an ICCID look like?

The ICCID is the serial number printed on a SIM card. It starts with 89, the telecom industry identifier, followed by the country code, the issuer and the card number, and ends with a check digit. 19 and 20 digits are both in use.

ICCID checks
CheckResultWhy
LengthWarning outside 19 or 20Both lengths are in use, so anything else is worth a look.
Prefix 89Warning if differentSIM cards use 89 as the industry identifier.
Check digitWarning if wrongSome issuers may not follow the check. Ask your SIM supplier.
Scientific notation, lettersErrorThe digits are lost or the value is not an ICCID.
Repeated ICCIDErrorOne SIM card cannot be in two rows.

Repeated plates, IMEIs and ICCIDs

The first row keeps the value. Later rows with the same IMEI or ICCID are errors, and the message names the row that came first. A plate is compared without spaces, hyphens, dots or case, so KLM 2101 and klm-2101 are the same plate. A repeated plate is a warning by default, because a vehicle can legitimately appear twice, for example when its device is replaced.

Dates the tool can read

Date formats
ExampleRead asNote
2026-03-1515 March 2026Always year-month-day.
15/03/202615 March 2026With day / month / year selected.
03/15/202615 March 2026With month / day / year selected.
2026031515 March 2026Eight digits.
4500015 March 2023A spreadsheet date number. Reported as a warning.
  • A date that does not exist, such as 31/02/2026, is an error. If it would exist in the other order, the message says so.
  • An install date in the future and an expiry date that has passed are warnings. An expiry before the install date is an error.
  • Only Gregorian dates are read. Convert Hijri dates first.
A clean list is not an accepted list

The tool checks format. It cannot know that a SIM is active, that an IMEI belongs to a device you own, or what a platform requires at import. The IMEI and ICCID rules were checked against 3GPP TS 23.003 and ITU-T E.118 on 2026-11-03. Ask your SIM supplier which ICCID length it issues.

Sources and limits

  • IMEI structure: 3GPP TS 23.003, clauses 6.2.1 and 6.2.2. An IMEI is an 8-digit type allocation code, a 6-digit serial number and a check digit computed as in Annex B. An IMEISV ends with a 2-digit software version instead.
  • ICCID: ITU-T E.118 (09/2025). It starts with 89, ends with a check digit computed with the Luhn formula, and new numbers have 19 digits. Earlier assignments are not affected, so the tool also accepts the 20-digit ICCIDs some suppliers issue.
  • The example IMEI 490154203237518: Wikipedia, International Mobile Equipment Identity. The check algorithm explained: Wikipedia, Luhn algorithm.
  • Sources and date checked 2026-11-03. Ask your SIM supplier which ICCID length it issues.
  • The calculations run in your browser. Your settings, and the list when it is short, are sent to our server and kept for up to 45 days only if you ask for the emailed report, because the link in the email carries them. Download the PDF straight away for a long list.
  • Up to 10,000 rows and 5 MB per file. Excel workbooks are not read: save the sheet as CSV first.

Plan the rollout before you load the list

A tidy list is the first step of a rollout of many devices. Tell Tracom how many devices you have and which platform you will use, and ask what the rollout needs.

  • Second-by-second data records how the vehicle behaves in fine detail.
  • SCMS portal manages device settings and configuration files in one place.
  • Advanced configuration files keep a tested setup repeatable across vehicles.
  • Over-the-air updates bring new firmware to devices in the field.

Questions about checking a fleet list

Planning a rollout of many devices? Contact Tracom.

Is my list uploaded?

Only if you ask for the emailed report. The text is read and checked in your browser, and the clean and rejected files are built there too. If you request the report, your settings, and the list when it is short, are sent to our server and kept for up to 45 days.

What is the IMEI check digit?

It is the 15th digit, calculated from the first 14 with the Luhn algorithm. If one digit is mistyped, the sum is almost always no longer a multiple of 10, so the error shows. It cannot catch every mistake, for example two digits swapped in some positions.

Why did Excel change my IMEI to 4.9E+14?

Excel treats a long run of digits as a number and shortens it. It keeps 15 significant digits only, so a longer ICCID loses digits. Import the file as text, or paste the raw text into this tool.

Why is a wrong ICCID check digit only a warning?

Because issuers differ. The format is well described, but whether every SIM batch follows the check is a question for the supplier. An IMEI check digit is an error, because every IMEI is expected to carry one.

Which date format should I use?

Use yyyy-mm-dd. It is read the same everywhere. If your list has 04/05/2026, choose day / month / year or month / day / year in Columns and rules, and check a few rows.

Does a clean result mean Tracom or my platform will accept the list?

Not necessarily. The tool checks format only. It does not say what Tracom or any platform accepts, whether a SIM is active, or whether a device is registered. Contact Tracom with your list size and platform to ask what your rollout needs.
